The cracks that have appeared in earth at Kuchchaveli in Trincomalee are not posing any danger.
The Disaster Management Centre emphasized that the people should not fear the phenomenon as it is not posing any risk. Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Centre Pradeep Kodippili said a several metres long earth crack was reported from the Trincomalee coast line. He said that field officers were conducting the relevant experiments to determine the reason for these cracks, although it is suspected to be normal behavior due to the layer of clay in the ground. The public were being cordoned off from the area with the assistance of the Army and Police. The cracks were being scientifically investigated. He said that it did not pose any danger to the public. However, the Geological survey and Mining Bureau said that extensive investigations are being carried into the occurrence. Our representative says that sand is surfacing from the cracks at several places.
