A Winnsboro volunteer firefighter broke his leg during an epic four-hour battle Sunday to extinguish a blaze that destroyed the 175-plus year-old Thespian Hall downtown.
The two-story brick Thespian Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which cites structures and sites as having historical, architectural and cultural significance. Thespian is a Greek word meaning pertaining to the dramatic arts.
The building was occupied by a restaurant on the ground floor and storage rooms on the second floor.
The fire was reported by a passer-by around 1 a.m. Sunday.
Officials are investigating the cause, Winnsboro Department of Public Safety Maj. William Gonzalez said.
