Investigators say two former volunteers firefighters used their firefighting tools to steal copper from several utilities.
North Police Chief Mark Fallaw told The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg that the firefighters and a third man were caught after someone reported seeing a suspicious vehicle near an SCE&G facility earlier this month.
Fallaw says the men used fire department bolt cutters to cut fences and take the copper wire. He says they have been linked to thefts in Dorchester, Orangeburg, Bamberg, Barnwell, Charleston, Aiken and Calhoun counties.
Police say 24-year-old Jonathan Ryan Carter; 17-year-old Daniel Addison Carter; and 21-year-old Jeffrey McQueen Riley all remain behind bars. It wasn't clear if any of them had attorneys.
