The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry has launched a new insurance scheme for fisher families.
Under the new scheme, the family of any fisherman who meets with an accident or any other issue at sea would be paid a sum of Rs. 100,000.
Fisheries Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne has said the new insurance scheme is expected to provide compensation to families of fishermen who have either died or gone missing at sea.
The minister has said that he expected to provide cover for around 175,000 Sri Lanka fishermen under this scheme.
According to Dr. Senaratne, the Ministry is also working out a plan to implement a pension scheme for fishermen as well.
