The cracks which appeared in the Kuchchaveli area in Trincomalee are attributed to the collection of more water than the sand layers under the earth. This is the determination made by the National Buildings and Research Organisation.
The organization pointed out that this was the reason for the cracks which and appeared on the earth and the surfacing of black coloured soil through these cracks. This will be a temporary situation. As such, the National Buildings Research Organization asserted that the public has no cause to panic. More water had seeped into the earth with the torrential rains experienced in the Eastern Province during the last few days. The Buildings Research Organization announced that the major views which were witnessed in the coastal area on Saturday may also be due to the water pressure. However, further investigations are in progress. The cracks which appeared on the land area affiliated to the lagoon spans one square kilometer. Sand mixed with earth had surfaced from about 20 locations.
