The situation in the Anuradhapura prison has been brought under control. Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera and Commissioner General of Prison V.R. de Silva have arrived at the prison premises.
Measures had been taken to evacuate the Army and Police that were providing security for the Prison. One was killed and 23 sustained injured in yesterday’s incident. A group of prisoners who were staging a protest for several days behaved in an unruly manner yesterday. Among the injured were Prison Officials as well as inmates. The Commissioner General of Prisons said investigations have already been launched into the incident.
He said the inmates were stging a protest from Sunday morning and the situation became tense last night. Eight officers and 13 inmates were injured and one died in the affair. The injured are currently receiving treatment at the Anuradhapura Hospital. The inmates have now returned to wards and the situation has returned to normalcy. He pointed out that he had requested the IGP to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Police Media Spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody said that a special police team has been deployed to carryout investigations. He said investigations are being carried out under the supervision of the Senior DIG and the DIG in charge of the Anuradhapura Division. A special team has been deployed to carryout the investigations. Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera issued instructions to the officers after inquiring into the situation.
