The Indian police have arrested two suspects regarding the attack on the Maha Bodhi temple in Chennai, India. The well wishers of LTTE had carried out the attack on the Maha Bodhi temple at about 10.00 p.m. last night. Several persons have sustained injuries and property has been damaged.
The Indian Authorities have launched extensive investigations into the incident. Secretary to the Buddha Sasana Ministry said that the Sri Lankan Government has taken maximum measures in this connection. The High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in India and the Deputy High Commissioner in Chennai were expected at the scene.
Certain elements are bent on provoking the Sri Lankans to create disturbance and achieve narrow political mileage through such activities. Members of Maha Sangaha have called upon the people not to be misguided by such acts. These elements may be engaged in an attempt to create political turmoil in the country in the face of the forthcoming elections. They requested the Sri Lankans people not to be carried away and to act with restraint and responsibility.
The Ven. Prof. Bellanwila Wimalarathana Thera expressed his displeasure and shock at the attack carried out by terrorists on the Maha Bodhi Centre. He said that the Indian Government also has a right to look into the motives of such attacks. The Indian Government should be enthused at this juncture to look into the matter and carryout investigations. He said that the problem should be solved with restraint and foresight.
The Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera said certain unruly elements have attacked the Maha Bodhi Centre in Chennai. He said that there have been conspiracies to provoke Buddhist for some time. He expressed his unhappiness about the incident and requested the people to act with restraint.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Government has assured to provide security to the Maha Bodhi Vihare in Chennai. A special police team has been deployed for the Deputy High Commission as well. ?
