U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn will deliver the keynote lecture in a series on health disparities at the University of South Carolina.
Friday's lecture is the third in an annual series and comes during events marking National Public Health Week.
Clyburn is scheduled to address the impact of health care reforms on alleviating disparities of diseases prevalent among South Carolina minorities. These include cancer, stroke, obesity and high blood pressure, among others.
The Democratic lawmaker from South Carolina was instrumental in the recent passage of the new federal health care overhaul.
In 2003, Clyburn and former South Carolina Sen. Ernest Hollings helped obtain funds that established USC's Institute for Partnerships to Eliminate Health Disparities.
