Nominations filed for Local Government polls

Nominations for the Local Government elections closed today. Many political parties including the United People’s Freedom Alliance have handed in nominations for 301 local bodies.

The acceptance of nominations for the local Government polls ended at 12.00 noon today. The United People’s Freedom Alliance filed nominations for every local body. The Freedom Alliance filed nominations for the Colombo District at the Elections Secretariat in Rajagiriya. General Secretary of the Freedom Alliance and Minister Susil Premajayantha and Minister Wimal Weerawansa patronized in this event. The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna also handed in nominations for the Colombo district.

The handing over of nominations of the Freedom Alliance for local bodies in the Polnnaruwa District took place under the patronage of Minister Maithripala Sirisena, who is also the General Secretary of the SLFP. Many people’s representatives including Ministers joined in the filing of nominations of the Freedom Alliance for the Anuradhapura District.

The United National Party also handed in nominations for local bodies of the Anuradhapura district this morning. Minister Reginald Cooral and Deputy Mnister Rohitha Abeygunawardena patronized in filing nominations of the Freedom alliance at the Kalutara District Secretariat this morning. The United National party and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna also forwarded nominations for the Kalutara district.

Senior Minister Piyasena Gamage led the handing over of the Freedom Alliance nominations for the Galle district this morning. The nominations of the Freedom Alliance for the Badulla district were filed under the patronage of Minister Dilan Perera this morning.

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera headed the group of the Freedom Alliance in filing nominations for the Hambantota district this morning. He was joined by Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa. Nominations for the Kurunegala district of the Freedom Alliance were submitted with the participation of Ministers S.B. Navinna, Anura Priyadharshana Yapa and Johnston Fernando.

The UNP and the JVP also filed nominations for the Kurunegala district this morning. Senior Minister Athauda Seneviratne and Sabaragamuwa Chief Minister Mahipala Herath joined in presenting the nominations of the Freedom Alliance for the Kegalla district. Minister C.B. Ratnayake participated in the presentation of Freedom Alliance nominations for the Nuwra Eliya district.

UNP representatives also handed in nominations for the Nuwara Eliya district. The Freedom Alliance presented nominations for 19 local bodies of the Kandy district with the participation of Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekenayake.

The nominations of the Freedom Alliance were also filed for local bodies of the Matale district. The UNP and the JVP also handed in nominations. Minister Douglas Devananda patronized in the handing over of nominations of the United People’s Freedom Alliance for local bodies of the Jaffna district. The Thamil Arasu Katchi and the United National Party also filed nominations for Jaffna.

Deputy Ministers Susantha Punchinilame and M.K.A.D.S. Gunawardena patronized in the handing over of nominations for local bodies of the Trincomalee district at the District Secretariat yesterday. Parliamentarian Hunais Farouk joined in the presentation of Freedom Alliance nominations for local bodies of the Vavuniya district. An independent group filed nominations for the Vavuniya South Pradeshiya Sabha. Minister Dullas Alahapperuma and Deputy Miniser Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena joined in handing in nominations of the Freedom Alliance for 16 local bodies of the Matara District. Several Parliamentarians were present.
