Cromartie reports to prison

Jan 27, 2011 5:17:00 PM - thestate.com
Columbia City Council’s longest-serving member, E.W. Cromartie, reported Wednesday to a federal prison in Williamsburg County.

Cromartie, 65, is serving a 12-month sentence after pleading guilty to one count of tax evasion and two charges of structuring bank deposits to avoid federal income reporting requirements.

An inmate locator lists his release date as Dec. 9.

Cromartie’s Columbia lawyer, I.S. Leevy Johnson, confirmed that his client reported Wednesday. Johnson said he did not accompany Cromartie to prison and did not know who did.

Cromartie served 27 years on City Council, representing District 2, which includes portions of Bush River Road and I- 126, the historic Waverly neighborhood as well as the Vista, Main Street and USC.
