Owners, whose houses at Mews Street were demolished, had rejected alternate houses given to them. The Attorney General has intimated to the Supreme Court that these owners had turned down the houses given to them by the Urban Development Authority.
Deputy Solicitor General Shavindra Fernando made this intimation to the Court when a petition filed by 17 house owners accusing the Government of demolishing their houses, was taken up for hearing. He further said that the Housing Development Authority had proposed to grant them houses from the Dematagoda area. But he pointed out that they had turned down the offer. Justice Shirani Thilakawardena informed the petitioners to take a suitable decision after inspecting the premises where the houses are located. Accordingly, the next hearing was fixed for the 7th of March. The petitioners were ordered to inform their decision on that day.
