Work on the flood control programme is successfully being carried out in Colombo.
The Land Reclamation and Development Corporation has planned to build 10 reservoirs in and around Colombo at the cost of 400 million rupees. The construction work of five of them is already underway. The reservoirs are being constructed at Ranpaala-watta in Pelawatta, Heen-ela near Kirimandala Mawatha in Narahenpita, Diyawanna Oya near the Waters Edge and at Talawatugoda and Peliyagoda. The construction work will be completed within the next few months. The reservoirs will be able to retain hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of water. They would help to control flash floods in Colombo during rains. The Government believes that the floods experienced at the Parliament Complex will also be controlled under the programme.
