Civilians of Weli-Oya villages have revealed to the Reconciliation Commission, the enormous hardships they encountered due to terrorism.
The Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission today visited Weli-Oya to study the real situation that prevailed when terrorism was active. Members of the Maha Sangha and the people of the Padavi Sripura area giving evidence clarified to the Commission the ruthlessness of terrorism. They revealed the immense difficulties experienced for a long period. The Commission which was appointed by the President to study the lessons learnt from terrorism and make recommendations to prevent a recurrence of such incidents in the future, obtained views of the people as well as scholars in the past. The Commission expects to conclude seeking evidence from the public on Monday. It is planned to seek the views within the next few days, from the people who are living in Welikanda and Palliyagodella villages in the Polonnaruwa district which were threatened by terrorism. The final report of the Commission is due to be presented to the President in May.
