Vinod Kambli still shudders when you remind him of that fateful evening at Eden Gardens more than a decade ago, when he walked off the field in tears. “That’s a moment I’ll never forget,” he says, “I still have nightmares thinking about that semifinal loss to Sri Lanka.” Here is Kambli’s assessment of World Cup 2011.
“I’ve played in a couple of World Cups and I know the pressure on the players. It’s much more than any ordinary tour because the expectations on the cricketers are huge. After the high due to the performance in South Africa, the Indian cricketers are charged up and ready to take on any team in the world. I’ll give Team India 99 per cent chance to win the Cup; let the rest of the teams have at least the remaining one per cent chance!
‘Give Sachin his dream’ Sachin Tendulkar is playing his sixth World Cup and it’s his dream to take home the trophy. If I were a player in the team, I’d do it for him! That’s the least you can do for a player who has played for the country tirelessly.
Kambli’s pick I think India, Sri Lanka and England will make the cut for the top three. The fourth team will be a surprise. Key member of Team India As a cricketer, I do not want to choose one player. The fact that three of our top players will be back in the team for the World Cup will boost their confidence. Of course, on an individual basis, my favourite player is Sachin!
Captain Cool MSD should grow his hair; it’ll give us a lot of luck. The last time he did it for the T20 World Cup, we won handsomely! I hope Dhoni does a Kapil and gets the Cup for India.
