Four Kershaw County sheriff’s deputies testified this morning that the man who received a beating was captured on video had been belligerent and uncooperative during his arrest.
The four were brought to the witness stand in U.S. District Court as the lawyers defending former Kershaw County Sheriff’s Sgt. Oddie Tribble began their efforts to convince a jury that their client did not violate the civil rights of Charles Shelley, a handcuffed detainee who was beaten Aug. 5 after he arrived at the Kershaw County Detention Center.
The trial is in its third day.
Tribble is expected to testify in his defense later this afternoon.
Tribble was one of two deputies in a transport van that carried Shelley to the jail with nine other prisoners. There, security cameras captured footage of Tribble beating Shelley with his metal police baton until Shelley fell with a broken leg.
