A sapling of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi will be taken to Buddhagaya in India to mark the 2600th Sambuddhathva Jayanthi.
The Sapling is due to be planted near the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Buddhagaya on Navam Full Moon Poya Day which falls on the 17th of this month. Several Pinkamas have been organized on this day. It includes the offering of alms to 2600 monks and the laying of the foundation stone for the Chaithya at Buddhagaya. Plans are afoot to take the sapling of the Jaya Sri Maha Bldhio to the Katunayake International Airport in a procession on the 8th of this month via Jaffna, Vavuniya, Bamdulla, Kandy, Pelmadulla and Matara. The gold plated bowl in which the bo sapling will be taken to Buddhagaya for planting was presented by Chairman of Sri Lanka Telecom Nimal Welgama to the Ven. Dodamgoda Revatha Thera.
Giving views at a news briefing held at the Information Department Secretary General of the Indian Mahabodhi Society and Chief Sanghanayake of India, the Ven. Revatha Thera said the Indian Central Government, the Bihar Government and the Indian Mahabodhi Society have made elaborate arrangements. There are no religious differences in India and the Army, school children and others are supporting. The prelate said the event is of special significance in all sectors, be it political, cultural, economic or religious wise.
In the meantime, the winners of the oratorical contest organized to mark the 146th commemoration of Anagarika Dharmapala were presented with air tickets for a tour of South India.
