Heathwood Hall football coach resigns

Feb 2, 2011 4:04:00 PM - thestate.com
Heathwood Hall is in search of a new head football coach, as Adger “Rip” Blackstone stepped down Wednesday.

Blackstone has been at Heathwood for three seasons. Although his final season ended with a 2-8 mark, the highlight of his tenure with the Highlanders was his second season, as the Highlanders streaked to the 2009 SCISA Class 3A championship game. The Highlanders were 12-1 in that season.

According to a written statement from athletics director Jeff Whalen, Blackstone cited his “personal philosophy of leading with excellence,” and felt that splitting his resources between coaching and teaching “was unfair to both parts of the school’s program.”

“I have had the privilege of knowing Rip Blackstone for nearly 20 years, and he is the kind of professional we all hope our own children encounter as an adult role model,” Whalen said. “Rip’s academic teaching reinforces the belief that the young people in our sports programs are students first, athletes second.”

Blackstone took over the Highlanders program after the retirement of Hall of Fame coach John Daye. Heathwood Hall will immediately begin its search for a new head coach, Whalen said.
