The Health Ministry has shed light with regard to an increasing trend in the overall child fertility Index in Sri Lanka.
A survey carried out by the Health Ministry has revealed that in the past the number of children a family can possess has increased. In comparison to the period 1953 to 2000, the child fertility index in Sri Lanka displays an increasing trend. The fertility index which stood at five in 1953 declined to one in the year 2001. By 2007 it increased to two. The Health Ministry points out that if this could be maintained in the future Sri Lanka’s population will double during the period 2025 to 2050. The details surfaced at a meeting which reviewed progress of the family health services. The meeting in Colombo was presided by Minister Maithripala Sirisena.
