The Sports Act is to be amended. Its purpose is to eliminate doping in sports.
Since sports play an important role in the protection of health and physical education, the need to encourage and coordinate international cooperation towards the elimination of doping in sports has been greatly felt. Cabinet approval has also been received to enter into an agreement with UNESCO. Cabinet approval was granted to sign an Anti-doping agreement with UNESCO for the elimination of doping in sports and to amend the Sports Law No.25 of 1973 and other relevant legislation as found necessary. The decision to amend the Sports Act has been taken on a proposal by Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage.
