Schools in disaster areas closed

Meanwhile, education is also hindered in several Provinces as a result of torrential rain and floods.

Almost every village in the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa Districts within the North Central Province are severely impacted by floods. North Central Chief Minister Bertie Premalal Dissanayake said that it has been decided to close all schools within the Province until further notice taking the prevailing situation into consideration. Dharmaraja College and the Gothami Girls School in the Central Province have been temporarily closed. Action had also been taken to close the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya and the Imbulpe Vidyalaya in Matale due to the adverse weather conditions. Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake said that the Keerthi Bandarapura Vidyalaya in walapone within the Nuwara Eliya District will also be kept closed. It has been decided to keep these schools closed until the weather improves. These schools are expected to function on holidays to re-cover the lost periods.
