The dignity of 63 years of independence echoed in Kataragama as the Independence Day National function was held at the Viharamaha Devi Grounds at Kandasurindugama in Kataragama today under the patronage of the President.
The main function of was organized in Kataragama in the Uva Province to express gratitude to the people of Uva for their dedication and sacrifice in achieving freedom of the motherland. Parliamentarians, Politicians, Diplomats and top brass of the Armed Forces graced the occasion. President Mahinda Rajapaksa was ushered into the venue by the mounted Police.
Hundreds of school children from Uva rendered the National Anthem after the President hoisted the National Flag marking 63 years of independence. Thereafter a two minutes silence was observed in memory of patriots who laid down their lives for the country. The Security Forces accorded a Gun Salute. It was followed by the President’s address to the nation.
