Sri Lanka commemorates 63 years of Independence with pride. The national commemorative function was held at the Viharamaha Devi Grounds at Kandasurindugama in Kataragama today under the patronage of the President Rajapaksa.
The main function of was organized at Kataragama in the Uva Province to express gratitude to to the people of Uva for their dedication and sacrifice in graining freedom for the motherland. Parliamentarians, Politicians, Diplomats and top brass of the Armed Forces graced the occasion. President Mahinda Rajapaksa was ushered into the venue by the mounted Police.
Hundreds of school children from Uva rendered the National Anthem with the hoisting of the National Flag by the President symbolizing the glory of 63 years of independence. Thereafter two minutes silence was observed in remembrance of the patriots who made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the country. It was followed by a Gun Salute by the Armed Forces for the nation.

Meanwhile, the parade of the security forces and the cultural pageant of the school children that marked the Independence Day added colour to Kandasurindugama..
Members of security forces, police and civil defence force joined in the parade. Thousands of service personnel displayed the uniqueness of various regiments. A notable feature was the participation of school children in the cultural events representing all communities including Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims. A large number of people thronged the venue to witness the colourful pageant braving the rainfall. Ministers, Parliamentarians, Senior Government Officials, Chiefs of the Security Forces and Foreign Diplomats were also present.
