There are signs of improvement in the floods experienced in several areas.
Flood waters are gradually subsiding in the Anuradhapura District, with improvements to the inclement weather experienced in the past few days. The Irrigation Engineer’s Office said that the danger posed by several tanks including Nachchduwa and Eruwewa has been overcome. In the meantime, the Navy has mediated in the rescue of people displaced by floods as a result of the overflow of Malwathu Oya. North Central Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake along with the Navy help in the rescue opertions.
All spill gates of the Kantale Tank have been opened following incessant rain. Irrigation Engineer I. Kananke said that they had to cut the bund of the Tank as it was about to breach.
All five spill gates of the Uda Walawa Reservoir have been opened following the torrential rain experienced in the area. Excess water is released to the Walawe River. As such the Irrigation Department has called on the public to exercise vigilance.
About 100 acres in the Kalalgamuwa area in Ududumbara has caved in. The Divisional Secretariat Division has taken the initiative to evacuate the affected families to secure locations.
A building of the Gammaduwa Tamil Vidyalaya in Matale was subject to a landslide. Rattota is still experiencing torrential rain. Our correspondent said that the landslide situation in the Punchi Rattota area is still intensifying. 22 houses have been damaged.
Meanwhile, landslides are being experienced in several areas in the Badulla District. A row of line rooms in the Kundagolla area in Badulla was caught up in a landslide.
