Nine investors are on line to establish apparel companies in the Northern and Eastern regions of Sri Lanka. They have forwarded their applications the Board of Investment.
It is expected to create 9,000 new jobs in the region with the launch of these industries, once the land allocation and infrastructure development issues are sorted out by the Government. Along with the apparel industry, the Government would survey the possibilities of adding countries such as India, China, Japan, Canada and Brazil to the list of countries importing Sri Lankan apparels, while maintaining the US and the EU, which presently serve as the key export markets of the apparels from Sri Lanka.
It was also revealed that the Government has already concluded the initial talks on the prospects of exporting Sri Lanka’s garments to Japan.
