Minister S.M. Chandrasena has said that leave of all officials of the Agrarian Services Department has been cancelled.
The Minister said that a large number of small tanks and anicuts had breached due to the incessant rain that was experienced in the last few days. He pointed out that 500,000 acres of cultivations had been submerged by flood waters and of this about 300,000 had been totally destroyed. The President had given instructions to grant relief to farmers and also to effect immediate repairs to anicuts and canals. As such he said that the leave of all Agrarian officials had been cancelled and they have been directed to the field. As soon as the weather improves, they will be carrying out repairs to the damaged anicuts and canals. He expressed his thanks to officials who are making a vital contribution to this task and extending assistance to the peasants.
