A Deputy Returning Officer will be appointed for every district for the first time in history to hold an impartial election.
Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dishanayake has issued a special gazette notification creating a Deputy Returning Officer position in view of the forthcoming local government election. Earlier the District Secretaries acted as District Returning Officers. According to the latest gazette notification every district will have a Deputy Returning Officer in addition to the Returning Officer. The Elections Secretariat said that an Assistant Elections Commissioner or a Deputy Elections Commissioner will act as Deputy Returning Officer.
