Hundreds of tanks and canals have been damaged due to torrential rain.
Commissioner General of Agrarian Services Ravindra Hewavitharana said that damage has been caused to nearly 500 tanks, canals and anicuts. 158 tanks in Anuradhapura District were damaged due to the torrential rains experienced last month. He said that two tanks and 12 canals were damaged due to the recent rain. 75 tanks in Polonnaruwa District and more than 100 canals and tanks in Batticaloa District were damaged due to rain. A large number of tanks and canals are damaged in Ampara and Vavuniya Districts. The Commissioner General said that the renovation work will commence after the water subsides.
Meanwhile paddy cultivations in the flood affected areas have also been destroyed. The Agriculture Minister said 90 percent of farm lands have been destroyed.
