The governing UPFA and the main opposition UNP are to file writ applications challenging the rejection of their nomination lists for the local government elections by the Elections Department.
The Elections Department rejected 36 nomination lists of the UPFA and nine of the UNP.
Both parties have already commenced the filing of writ applications in court challenging the rejection of their respective nomination lists.
UPFA nomination board member and Minister Dullas Alahapperuma and UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake have expressed confidence in receiving the green light to proceed with their nomination lists, as they claim the rejections have been due to minor technical issues.
However, the holding of local government elections to about 45 local government bodies on March 17 would now depend on the judiciary with the UPFA and UNP resorting to legal action.
