The JVP has called on the government to stop spending millions on exhibitions and to provide food items to the people affected by the floods.
JVP Propaganda Secretary and parliamentarian Vijitha Herath told a press conference that apart from the people in welfare camps and in urban areas, the other people affected by the floods living in the interior areas of the country have not received any form of relief.
He said the government has not done a proper head count of the people affected by the floods.
He also said the government had failed to reimburse money spent by Divisional Secretaries and Grama Seva Niladharis for the purchase of relief items to be distributed among people affected by disasters in the past.
The officials therefore are now hesitant to come forward and provide assistance to the flood affected this time around.
According to Herath, the government is to yet to settle Rs.500, 000 for the purchases made in the Kantale area for the people affected by the closure of the Mavil Aru anicut in 2006 and government officials are now unwilling to purchase anything on late payment basis.
