Troopers get $1.5M to crack down on speeding

Feb 8, 2011 7:02:00 AM - thestate.com
Some of South Carolina's most dangerous highways will soon be under the scrutiny of extra troopers.

The state Department of Transportation is giving the Highway Patrol $1.5 million to let troopers work overtime on roads with a high number of deaths in collisions caused by driving too fast.

Highway Patrol Col. Kenny Lancaster says he hopes having troopers concentrate on speeding will reduce deaths similar to a recent drunken driving crackdown.

Most of the highways aren't interstates, but are heavily traveled roads.

The money from DOT is expanding a program that began in Greenville and Horry counties in November.
