The new currency notes including the 5000 rupee note are now in circulation.
The release of the currency notes for circulation took place in Colombo today under the patronage of Senior Minister Dr. Sarath Amuugama. The notes are of the 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 5000 rupee denominations. All notes are of the same width while the length increases by one millimeter from the lower to the higher value. The Central bank said it would now stop the printing of the 1000 rupees and 2000 rupee notes. Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabral said the new notes clearly display the prosperity of the Sri Lanka economy.
