Lexington Medical Center will partner with Duke Medicine on its new heart surgery unit, relying on Dukes expertise to help recruit surgeons and staff and set up the operating room.
The hospital announced its affiliation with Duke at a news conference Tuesday morning.
Our collaboration with Duke will allow our community to receive excellent heart care at Lexington Medical Center, said Mike Biediger, president and CEO. We will enhance the delivery of health care and save lives.
Lexington Medical Center is the 12th hospital to become a Duke cardiovascular affiliate. The others include Beaufort (S.C.) Memorial Hospital as well as medical centers in Florida, North Carolina and Virginia.
Lexington Medical Center has been working to start its own open heart surgery program for more than a decade. Other hospitals in the Midlands with heart surgery teams fought against Lexington until last year, when Lexington and Providence Hospital negotiated a deal for Providence to give up one of its heart units.
