South Carolina Lt. Gov. Ken Ard has retained a lawyer as the state Ethics Commission questions Ard's campaign spending and at least one missing campaign finance report.
Ard's campaign finance report shows he spent nearly $25,000 since the Nov. 2 election. That included nearly $1,200 for meals, $3,000 at a Florence Best Buy store and $800 at a women's apparel store. The commission wrote Ard last week, asking him to provide details of spending by Feb. 15.
Lawyer Butch Bowers said Tuesday the questions about Ard are routine. He said the commission has agreed to move the deadline for details to Feb. 25.
"I would characterize it as a routine inquiry and I would say we look forward to cooperating with the commission and having an opportunity to respond to their routine inquiries," Bowers said. "The results will confirm that Lieutenant Governor Ard has been a good steward of his campaign account."
Ard deferred questions on the investigation to Bowers and would not discuss details of his campaign account spending.
