Power for all before schedule

The programme of providing power supplies to every household is likely to become a reality before the anticipated period.

The Government has undertaken many programmes with the intention of increasing power consumption up to 100 percent by next year. The Ministry of Power and Energy plans to launch 513 more power projects and complete work on another 1070 schemes. The allocation made for this work is more than 2122 million rupees. Projects to meet the demand for power within the 25 Districts are in operation. The Ministry said power consumption in the Colombo, Gampaha and Hambantota Districts had been increased to 100 percent. It was possible to meet a high percentage of power requirements in many Districts by the end of last year. The Ministry said that power consumption in other districts excluding Kilinochchi and Mullaitive had recorded a growth of over 50 percent. Accordingly the Ministry emphasized that the power for all projects schedule to be completed by 2012 would become a reality before schedule.
