New legislation has been presented in parliament to enable disabled persons to be accompanied by another when casting their votes at elections.

Following the new legislation, persons who are totally or partially visually impaired and those suffering from physical disabilities that prevent them from validly marking a ballot paper will be able to exercise their franchise with the help of a person accompanying them.

Leader of the House and Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva today (9) presented the Elections (Special Provisions) Bill in parliament.

According to the Bill, a disabled person who wishes to vote could do so by producing a Certificate of Eligibility in the format provided for in the Bill and to be accompanied by a person who is over 18 years of age to the polling booth.
