A group planning a park at Hilton Head Island commemorating the nation's first freedman's village is looking at ways to raise money and staff the project.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports more than 30 people are meeting this week to discuss issues facing the Mitchelville Preservation Project.
Mitchelville was established in 1862 during the Civil War after Union troops captured Hilton Head Island. It once had a population of about 1,500 former slaves.
Board members discussed the challenges of how to fund the project, especially in a down economy when the island's Heritage PGA golf tournament is still looking for a title sponsor.
Officials say it will cost $4.5 million to develop the first phase of the park.
