4.1 million kilograms of vegetable have been destroyed due to rain in Nuwara Eliya. The Agriculture Department has launched a programme to minimize the vegetable shortage.
Vegetable cultivations have been destroyed due to the torrential rain experienced in the Central Province. Nuwara Eliya District Secretary D.P.G. Kumarasiri said the vegetable produce expected to be issued to the market before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year has been destroyed. The adverse weather has affected carrot, leeks, potato, cabbage, beetroot and lettuce cultivations. The District Secretary said the 40 percent of the vegetable harvest to be issued to the market in the first four months has been destroyed. The loss amounts to two hundred million rupees. The Agriculture and the Economic Development Ministry have jointly launched a programme to minimize the vegetable shortage in the future. The District Secretary said farmers will be provided vegetable seeds from which harvest can be reaped in 45 days.
