The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating an officer shooting Thursday evening involving the Columbia Police Department near the citys Old Shandon and Melrose Heights neighborhoods.
According to Columbia Police Department spokesman Brick Lewis, the incident occurred around 6 p.m. at 2800 Millwood Ave. at Maple Street during a traffic stop to investigate possible drug-related activity.
An unnamed Columbia police officer pulled a four-door sedan with two men inside over after witnessing what he thought was a drug transaction nearby. The officer was joined by a second officer for backup. While the driver was being questioned outside the car, a second suspect moved over to the drivers seat and put the car in drive, police said.
The first officer was struck by the car, leading the second officer to draw his weapon and fire, Lewis said. After the suspect fled north in the car on Millwood Avenue, local hospitals were alerted to be on the lookout for someone coming in with a gunshot wound.
According to police, the suspect arrived at a local hospital about 30 minutes later with an unknown number of gunshot wounds and was taken into police custody. His condition is not life-threatening, Lewis said.
