The CID is carrying out operations to recover 800,000 metric tons of paddy alleged to have been hoarded by the private sector.
Minister Johnston Fernando said that the CID is carrying out the operation on the advice of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. In addition the Consumer Affairs Authority will also carryout raids. Apart from the paddy reserve of the Government, 800 metric tons of paddy, is in the possession of the private sector. Minister Johnston Fernando blamed private businessmen for concealing these stocks with assistance of certain groups engaged in sabotage. The Minister said that their expectation is to conceal the stocks and create an artificial shortage. The Government has taken maximum measures to control the price of paddy. Accordingly 25,000 metric tons of paddy were issued to the market from the Government Reserves yesterday.
