Richard M. Corbin, who police say hit an officer with a car Thursday, will be charged with attempted murder and possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, police announced today.
The 21-year-old Corbin, of Webb Court in Columbia, is hospitalized with a single gun shot wound to the arm. He was shot Thursday evening by a Columbia police officer after a traffic stop on Millwood Ave near Maple Street.
According to the police account of events, Corbin and a companion were stopped by city police after an officer witnessed what he thought was a drug transaction. While the driver was outside the vehicle, Corbin, a passenger in the car, took the wheel and tried to run into a police officer.
At that point, a second officer fired on Corbin, hitting him in the arm as Corbin drove off.
The cars original driver will not be charged, police said.
