Its only four days more for the opening of the newly laid express rail track from Galle to Colombo, thus resuming the operation of trains between these two stations.
Work on the first stage of the express rail track from Colombo to Matara has been completed. The first stage runs from Galle to Matara, which is 43 kilometres. A special test run was conducted before the opening of the track for operation of trains.
The train can operate on this rail line at a speed of 100 miles per hour. It takes only several minutes to reach Matara from Galle. The Project comprises three stages. The work on the entire project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The second stage is from Kalutara to Galle while the third stage includes the laying of the express line from Kalutara to Colombo. The opening of the first stage that is from Galle to Matara is scheduled to take place on Wednesday the 16th marking another milestone in Sri Lanka’s rail transport.
