Constructions sans the approval of the National Buildings Research Organisation are totally prohibited. The Disaster Management Minister emphasized that Heads of Local Bodies granting permission for such construction will have to foot the expenditure in case of a sudden disaster.
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said the approval of the Institute is mandatory to construct buildings. The task of granting approval had been vested in the Local Councils with the nod of the Institute. The Heads of the local bodies or the Officer who solely granted permission to put up constructions in danger zones, sans the approval of the National Buildings Research Institute, the person concerned would have to foot the expenditure in case of a disaster, even if he was not holding office on that occasion.
Minister Amaraweera was speaking at a special discussion held at the Kandy District Secretariat with regard to the granting of relief to people who were threatened by landslides and caving in within the District, as a result of torrential rain. The Minister revealed that about 200 acres had already been set aside from the Galaha area in Kandy to build new houses on behalf of houses in danger zones. Parliamentarian Dilum Amunugama, Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, Kandy District Secretary Gamini Seneviratne and State officials were present at this discussion.
