Parliamentarian Thilanga Sumathipala addressing the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference commented on the poverty alleviation programme.
He said that Sri Lanka has a literacy rate of 91percent. Now the country is concentrating on IT literacy. 14 million people out of the population of 19 million use mobile phones. The technology is enhancing and low income people gain access to information in this way. If they acquire more knowledge they can be a part of the system.
He said that Samurdhi Managers have entered Parliament and local government institutions. When the poorest of poor are empowered they also can be part of the decision making process. He said that the government has recognized this fact in giving nominations as they understood the problems of the poor.
