Parliamentarian A.H.M. Azwar addressing the Commonwealth Parliamentary representatives has said that many elections have proven that Sri Lanka is enjoying maximum democracy.
The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Asia Regional Conference was held in Colombo for the second day today. The representatives of the regional parliaments continued to express their views today. Expressing his views on the inaugural day yesterday, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe said that the time has come to protect democracy and independence of the judiciary and intervention has to be made in this connection. Parliamentarian A.H.M. Azwar addressing the Conference today said that the independence of the judiciary is ensured in the country. He said that after the President came into power the Supreme Court gave a judgment ordering the removal of all barricades. It was a bad time but the President said he would bow to the verdict of the Supreme Court. Sri Lanka has held 17 elections after 2005. People have given their mandate to the President. The will of the people cannot be changed. He said that people from this country can go to the World Bank or the IMF and ask not to grant loans. He said that such people are betrayers.
