The dairy industry in the North is reawakening. The Nestle Company says 15 percent of the milk comes from dairy farmers in the North and the East.
Milk production in the North and the East registered a huge growth about three decades ago. The two Provinces were able to produce the milk requirement for consumption. However, the dairy industry suffered a serious setback due to terrorism. Finally the dairy industry is now resuscitating in the two Provinces with the end of the war. It was the Nestle Company which approached the dairy farmers in the North with the war drawing to an end. As referred to by the Company, of the total 45 million litres of milk obtained locally last year, 15 percent came from the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
The Government has drawn its attention to strengthening the dairy farmer as well uplifting the livestock industry. The Livestock Development Ministry has mooteda massive programme to strengthen the dairy farmer. Assistant Vice Chairman of the Nestle Company Ashoka Bandara said that their Company was making a vital contribution in this respect.
