The Colombo City will not be threatened with floods in the future. The Land Reclamation and Development Corporation has put forward a sustainable programme to control floods.
The Land Reclamation and Development Corporation is operating under the purview of the Defence Ministry. It has already succeeded in addressing many environmental problems within the Colombo City and its suburbs. Under the programme canals in Wellawatte, Kirulapone, Kotte, Kolonnawa, Dematagoda, Dehiwala, Bloemendhal and Torrington and the waterways which carry rain water to the sea had been repaired and cleaned.
Illegal constructions in addition to development, cause hindrance to maintain the beautiful environment of the City. A new programme through the Corporation has also been mooted for the benefit of families who had tken shelter in these illegal structures. The full support of these families is essential for the programme. It will also help in improving their standard of living. Water reserves are coming up in identified reserves such as Rajagiriya, Muthurajawala, Pelawatte and Hin-ela
