The Consumer Affairs Authority with the intention of protecting the consumers, moulding a disciplined trading fraternity has increased its annual raids to 70,000.
The programme has been mooted on the instructions of Minister Johnston Fernando. Certain traders are endeavouring to hoard rice stocks following the recent deluge. The intention of certain unscrupulous traders is to increase the price of rice. The Consumer Services Authority had succeeded in nabbing traders who sold rice above the control price and also 450 centres where rice stocks had been hoarded. The Minister has given instructions to further increase the raids. The Trade Minister pointed out that it is planned to provide 10 percent of the earnings achieved through the raids, with the purpose of enticing the officers who are engaged in these operations. He added that he has already discussed this matter with the President.
