The Welipitiya Divisional Secretariat in the Matara District has taken steps to cut and remove more than 500 coconut trees that are reportedly affected by blight.
The cutting down of the coconut trees have raised much concern in the area and the owners of the coconut plantations have told the media that an official who had come with two laborers had earmarked the trees that were to be cut down.
The coconut plantation owners have been informed by the respective official that they would be liable if the infected trees were not cut down and removed.
Thousands of coconut trees were cut down a few months earlier due to an infection. The government attributed the shortage of coconuts experienced in the country to the cutting down of coconut trees.
The government has now imposed a regulation where coconut trees cannot be cut down without approval.
