The Cooperatives and Internal Trade Ministry has decided to distribute plastic containers to vegetable and fruit traders for the transportation of the food items.
Cooperatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando has told the media that 400,000 plastic containers will be distributed by the Ministry.
The Ministry earlier imposed a rule on the proper packing of fruits and vegetables for transportation with the use of either plastic, wood or hard paper containers.
The regulation is to come into effect from March 1.
The plastic containers are to be purchased from the government and distributed among traders through the economic centers.
