Firefighters from at least three counties have responded to a fire and explosion at a Hartsville fertilizer plant.
The Morning News of Florence reported that the fire at Agrium's Rainbow operations plant started around 7 p.m. Monday. So far, no injuries have been reported.
With brisk winds blowing in the area, flames spread through the surrounding woods. An adjacent Sonoco plant was placed on alert and evacuated.
Darlington County Sheriff's Office Capt. Andy Locklair said there have been voluntary evacuations of several neighborhoods, and once people leave, they aren't allowed back in. The American Red Cross has opened a shelter to house the evacuees.
Officials were also concerned about hazardous materials getting into the air, but there were no immediate reports of problems.
